If you are serious about becoming a good professional translator, it would not be enough if you just know some foreign language.  Many people believed that translation is just the process of taking texts and substituting them into another language, but this is not always the case.

To become a professional translator, you need to have an in-depth understanding in native languages with the cultural differences.  The process of translation requires that one is experienced and possess the right skills in order for him to be able to make right analysis on the targeted language’s meaning. A good translator must have the right skill and knowledge on how he can translate the documents in which the readers in the targeted language can relate to.  Among the criteria that a good translator should fulfill are being able to read many different languages, able to write in both target and source language well, able to use well the bilingual dictionaries, able to right questions an listen well.

A lot of training is required if you want to become a good translator.  You need to understand that it is not something that can happen overnight.  One needs lots of learning as well. Experience all has a role in making one a good tranlator.
